Few Amateurs at British Open, but they can all play!

There are always a few amateurs who make it to the British Open and when they do they earn all the respect from their playing competitors and rivals the same and the professionals in the field admire the way they play and that they are still loyal to the game due to not having joined the paid ranks like themselves. The few amateurs that actually make it into the final field will compete for the Silver Medal which is awarded every year to the lowest finishing amateur in the field whether they make the cut or not has nothing to do with it all.

The fact is that they are competing among their own idols and they have all the support they need from the crowd, why do I say this well because the crowd loves nothing more to cheer for an amateur especially when they make it to the weekend. I have seen my fair share of British Opens and nothing comes to mind better when young Justin Rose had the crowds going wild because he was there battling the best come Sunday afternoon and when he holes out from the rough on the last hole to finish it the event it was such a surreal moment. If one would not have known better you could have thought that he had just won the Open Championship with that short. Then a few years ago it was young Rory McIlroy that was making noise the entire week with his stellar play and impressive length of the tee.

It is though the first time I get to see a fellow Dane playing in the Open as an Amateur and that player this year is Lucas Bjerregaard who this year became only the second player from Denmark to win the European Amateur Championship when he shot an impressive fifteen under par that gave him a one shot victory. This kid has all the potential and hopefully he will continue is great play here at the British Open, but no matter what happens this week he has bright future in front of him because he will be heading to Florida State University to take an active role on the men`s golf team roster. It will be interesting to see if any of the amateurs will make it to the weekend, but if they don`t they will all walk away with a lot of new experiences to remember their entire lives.
