MercedesCup both finalists are back in Germany
There are two ATP events this week and both are being played on the European Continent and the same goes for the WTA they have two events also this week and both are being played in Europe. The Mercedes Cup has been played ever since 1916 and every year since it was founded the event has been hosted in Stuttgart, Germany. The doubles event started being part of the tournament in 1978 and the first year the event was hosted it was the team of Jan Kodes and Tomas Smid that took the title.
Last year it was the team of Carlos Berlocq and his fellow countryman from Argentina Eduardo Schwank that beat the pair of Germans Christopher Kas and Philipp Petzschner, but don`t feel too bad for the German duo they won the event in 2008. Let`s get back to talking about the Singles event here Stuttgart, last year it was the Spaniard Albert Montanes that walked away with the title and the prize money, but also was rewarded a brand new Mercedes which if you ask me is not bad at all for a week’s work. Though he won the event he left with a bitter taste in his mouth I say this because he won the first set over Gael Monfils 6-2, but then when the score was 1-2 in the second set Gael Monfils withdrew and handed the title to a more than happy Albert Montanes, but the crowd was not all that happy. One of the players in the tournaments past that has had no luck at all is Argentinean Gaston Gaudio he managed to finish runner up three times so close to getting a car yet so far. There are five players in the tournament this year that I fancy have a chance of walking away with a win this week and they are the defending champion Montanes, Gael Monfils, Gilles Simon, Jurgen Melzer and Juan Ignacio Chela one of these five players will take the title.
