One Great Season

Are you going to tonight’s social meet-up? Did you go to that media mixer on Monday?

For those who embrace modern networking, there are plenty of ways to connect with like-minded folks in your field as you seek a better job and, possibly, a better life. You might even have something planned for tonight.

Don’t forget your business cards.

But what if you’re an aspiring black football or basketball coach? Or an aspiring Major League Baseball executive? There’s no weekly or monthly happy hour where hopeful climbers can gather conveniently and pass contact information around. And what if it was still the 1990s?

One Great Season

With Fashion Week getting started here in New York on Friday, it only makes sense to put the OGS Lists team to work and have them crank out a collection of the best uniforms in basketball. Here’s what they came up with:

  1. Los Angeles Lakers road unis: The overall coolness of the Lakers kits took a hit when they rolled out the white-on-white look about a decade ago. But the purple and gold is a great mix, and the design hasn’t deviated once in my lifetime. Here’s to consistency!

  • UCLA Bruins home unis: We’re talking about style, so of course we’re keeping it in Los Angeles.

Canadian sports betting fan could be tempted to take a gamble on something a little different in the coming days as the Oscars awards ceremony approaches.

The 83rd Annual Academy Awards will take place on February 27th and will be attended by the biggest names in the world of film.

Many experts are predicting a successful evening for British actor Colin Firth following his captivating performance in The King’s Speech.

The amiable 50-year-old, whose past credits include Love Actually and A Single Man, is the heavy 1/33 favorite with 888 Sport to win the Best Actor category.

With those odds, it would appear foolhardy to back anyone else, but if you fancy an upset on the night then James Franco is 14/1 to take the gong for his part in adventure thriller 127 Hours.

The King’s Speech is 1/6 to be awarded Best Film, with The Social Network rated as 7/2 second-favourite.

Gripping drama Black Swan, starring Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis, is 40/1, the same odds as True Grit.

In the category of Best Supporting Actor, Christian Bale, another Brit, is 1/6 favorite, while The King’s Speech’s Geoffrey Rush is 7/2.

Portman is 1/12 to be crowned Best Actress for her astounding performance in Black Swan, while Nicole Kidman, who has already won the category once, is a 40/1 outsider for her role in Rabbit Hole.

One category in which The King’s Speech is expected to lose out is Best Director, for which The Social Network’s David Fincher is 8/13 favourite.

Melissa Leo, who played Alice Ward in The Fighter, is 4/11 favorite to go home with the Best Supporting Actress award.

    One Great Season

We were a little rough on Mick Cronin in this space a week ago, and considering what happened to his Bearcats in Pittsburgh Saturday night, we have no reason to change our tune.

Cincinnati got manhandled by the Big East-leading and fourth-ranked Panthers. Not that anyone had the right to expect a UC victory on the road, but at some point, Cronin needs to put some resume wins together. With Louisville, Georgetown twice, Connecticut and even Marquette left on the schedule, there are many opportunities. If he doesn’t claim a few of them, Cronin will need to fire up that home computer and update his own resume.

Green Bay may have only won the Super Bowl on Sunday and labor disputes could derail next season but Al Dannity is already making his call for Super Bowl XLVI.

Tough road for repeat Green Bay managed to win Super Bowl XLV despite losing 15 players to IR over the course of the regular season, including stars such as Jermichael Finley. They will need all of their big names back if they want to record back-to-back championships. Looking within the NFC, the Bears, Eagles and Giants all look capable of stepping into Super Bowl contention with a little help in the draft. The Falcons and Saints will likely require a little more work upgrading in the off-season but both are capable of mounting challenges.
